Environmental stresses
Stresses acting upon human beings that are environmental in origin, as opposed to those associated directly with the work task, are a significant factor. Examples of environmental stresses are limatic influences such as wind, heat, noise, solids/liquids and gases. Depending upon the nature of the stress, it induces a strain upon the body, as in the case of heat during physical work, or upon mental capacity, as in the case of noise affecting the ability to concentrate. Environmental stresses can often be influenced only indirectly by the design of a machine or installation. It must always be ensured that the machine does not itself have an unfavourable impact and that its use is designed such that human beings are well protected against environmental influences.
Exposure to solids, liquids or gases at work may be hazardous, particularly when exposure is longer in duration. Even where a health impairment cannot be demonstrated, the worker's well-being may nevertheless be impaired, for example by unpleasant odour. Machines should be designed such that, if at all possible, no substances posing a risk to health are generated, or that they are at least not allowed to escape from the machine.

Lighting on machinery is important in order for the work task to be performed easily and correctly. Attention must be paid to lighting being both adequate and glare-free. Information on good lighting can be found in a number of standards specific to certain machine types.

In sufficient quantities, radiation may have a devastating impact upon the human body. Machines should generally be designed such that they do not require the use of materials that emit radiation. If this is not possible, suitable screening must be provided.

Noise is ambient sound that is considered a nuisance. Noise may occur in the machine's environment or may be generated by the machine itself. Since the operator of the machine is not the only person affected by the noise impact, machinery should be designed where possible such that it does not generate a high noise level. Unavoidable noise must be limited as far as possible by suitable measures such as encapsulation or screening. Standards setting out how procedures for the measurement of noise emissions exist for a number of machine types.

Climatic influences such as high or low temperatures may present high levels of stress for human beings. The design of machinery must consider the climatic conditions prevailing in the work environment. On machines used outdoors in the winter, heated handles may for example be advantageous.

Exposure of human beings to vibration can be harmful in the long term and cause a range of diseases. Significant factors are the vibration amplitude, frequency, and duration of exposure. Machines with an operator's station or driver's platform in particular should be designed such that any vibrations occurring are not transmitted to the operator. Since vibration is generally also associated with exposure to noise, machines must be designed to cause the lowest possible exposure to Vibration.
