Mental stresses

Mental stresses are influences upon a human being caused by the work task, the working environment or the work equipment, and impacting upon mental capacity such as clear-headedness, memory or cognitive ability. If these influences are too diverse, too chaotic or too intensive, they may cause excessive mental strain.

Design of operator interfaces

The design of operator interfaces is important in order for the operation of machinery to be straightforward and user-friendly. An operator interface of unsuitable design can result in elevated mental strain. The design must also take account of the skills of the operating personnel and the purpose for which the machine is to be used. Important standards governing the design of operator interfaces can be found in the EN 894 and EN ISO 9241 series of Standards.

Overview

Need for sustained concentration

Where work tasks demand a high level of concentration over a sustained period of time from the person performing them, they may lead to fatigue and mental overload. Machine controls should therefore be designed such that their use does not require sustained concentration.

Overview

Underload and monotony

Simple, continually repeated tasks can lead to monotony for workers, which becomes apparent through fatigue, boredom and demotivation. For this to be avoided, such tasks should if possible be performed by machines, and the human operatives should assume varied tasks in control of the machinery.

Overview

Overload caused by the work task

Where the task is mentally demanding, the worker may experience mental overload. This may be the case with complicated motor tasks, complex observation tasks, or high demands upon combinatorial thinking ability. Machinery and machine controls should be designed such as to provide optimum support for human operatives in coping with such challenges, for example by presenting information selectively and concisely.
